The item suggests the following to me

1, there is a high demand on Google Books that I did not know about.
2, allowing Sony to access the books, would suggest Google could, or will soon be getting a payment from Sony.
3, Therefore Google Books could be putting restrictions on downloads from its servers, in order to give priority to Sony etc

Google got hold of the books, provided it allowed free downloads to people coming to its web site, but with a income stream from Sony etc, its not in its best interest to have free downloads from its web site any more.

So, to stick to its deal to allow free downloads, which it has no choice on, it is making it harder, yes, they will always be free from Google Books, provided you find out how, on a day by day basis, and are prepared for slow downloads.

Nb, on these Ereaders, I am assuming there is no way to transfer to another platform, so, one copy, one E-reader fulfils Googles' obligations to the book owners 100%, and payment is made by Sony etc?????

Yes and there is a sucker born every second throughout the world. The brain dead minions walking around with their ipods plugged into their brains will gladly fork over their money. History in real time; it is sad to watch the progression of what you are referring to, and how little those brain-dead minions understand. It is also sad to see western culture turning the entire world into one great 'grabocracy', where delusions are real and reality is considered abnormal. google seems to represent the pinnacle of this mentality, talk the talk, but hide your real motivations behind a corrupt legal system and 'pr' performers on par with those of Nazi Germany in the 1930's.
